The fishing lake
Did you know that the Domaine de Claire-Fontaine is also a great fishing spot? The water here is teeming with many different species of fish. The dominant species is carp, but there’s also plenty of tench, bream, roach and pike. Whether it’s your first time with a rod or your hundredth, the Godarville Lake guarantees hours of fun and relaxation by the water!
The Godarville nature reserve
In the 18th century, Claire-Fontaine covered an area that went nearly up to the source of the river Piéton, a tributary of the Sambre, and was almost entirely covered by marshland. But with the construction of the Charleroi-Brussels canal, sandy rubbly, mining deposits and coal shale eventually filled it up and made it useable. Thanks to these, the Godarville reserve now boasts ponds, marshes, sandy and rocky hills, and an artificial plateau.
Currently, the estate’s nature reserve is made up of a little dry land and a lot of wet, making it the ideal habitat for a remarkable range of plants and wildlife. The wetlands are a good place to spot a number of interesting wild birds, too. The Walloon regional authorities have awarded the Godarville nature reserve the label of Site de Grand Interêt Biologique (SGIB – Site of great biological interest).
